Although most (but not all) traumatized people go through short term symptoms, the majority of victims do not develop chronic PTSD. Not everyone with PTSD has been through a dangerous event, either. Some incidents, like the sudden passing of a loved one or an unexpected scolding from a parent, can cause PTSD.
Symptoms normally begin to show within 3 months of the traumatic incident, however, there are cases when they begin materializing only years after.
A mental health counselor who has experience helping people with mental conditions can diagnose PTSD.
To be diagnosed with PTSD, a patient must have the following symptoms for at least 1 month:
- At least one re-experiencing symptom
- At least one avoidance symptom
- At least two arousal and reactivity symptoms
- At least two cognition and mood symptoms
